Behind the Black Doors

Chapter 05 - Behind the Black Doors

The black doors opened onto a narrow corridor smelling of floor polish and rain-damp cardboard.

Marcus walked first, flanked by two security guards. Victoria followed, protesting that the search was humiliating and unnecessary. Eleanor came behind Samuel and Daniel, while Noah remained with his mother but kept his camera recording.

The corridor led to the loading dock, conservation room and a locked records office. Marcus claimed the black case had contained lighting equipment. The guard asked him to open the conservation room.

His key failed twice because his hand was shaking.

Inside, the worktables had been cleaned too carefully. Bottles stood in perfect rows. No dust marked the steel surfaces except one rectangular space beneath a ventilation hood. A faint red powder remained in the corner.

Eleanor rubbed none of it. She bent close and recognized the color.

Rouge polishing compound.

On the floor, Daniel found a strip of blue foam matching the lining visible in Noah’s footage. Samuel opened the waste bin and discovered disposable gloves, resin-stained swabs and a trimmed length of new lead came.

Victoria said conservation work always produced such material.

Eleanor pointed to the lead. “Then why is it cut to the exact curve of the Scarlet Wing?”

Marcus leaned against the table.

The guard opened a cabinet and found the black case. It was empty, but the foam inside had been shaped for a triangular object. A cargo document lay folded beneath the padding. The destination line had been torn away.

Noah entered with his mother after Daniel called them in. He compared the silver label in his video to the corner still attached to the case. The numbers matched.

Samuel asked Marcus where the original was.

Marcus looked at Victoria.

That glance lasted less than a second, but everyone saw it.

Victoria stepped forward. “Do not look at me as though I instructed you to do something illegal.”

“I didn’t say you did,” Marcus replied.

“You were about to.”

The words escaped her before she could stop them.

Daniel ordered security to contact the police and the museum’s insurer. Victoria argued that public scandal would destroy the foundation. Samuel answered that the scandal had begun the moment someone tried to sell a stolen artifact under the cover of a charity gala.

Eleanor remained beside the empty case.

Pressed into the blue foam was a tiny curved indentation.

The real Scarlet Wing’s trapped air bubble had left no mark, but its raised copper swallow had.

The original had been inside that case.

And it had left Briarwood Hall recently enough for the foam to remember it.
