A Director Losing Control

Chapter 03 - A Director Losing Control

Back in Briarwood Hall, Victoria Crowell recovered quickly.

She had spent her adult life managing rooms filled with wealthy people. Panic, she knew, was contagious; authority was theater. She straightened her cream jacket, placed the false fragment back on the pedestal and spoke with the patient smile she used for difficult donors.

“This is an unfortunate attempt to hijack a charitable event,” she announced. “Ms. Grant is a volunteer with access to the building. Her claim is unsupported, and the artifact appears to have been altered after arrival.”

The accusation shifted again, more carefully this time. Eleanor was no longer merely careless. She was being positioned as the person who had replaced the original.

Board chairman Daniel Whitmore stepped forward. “Victoria, was the fragment authenticated before tonight?”

“Of course.”

“By whom?”

“Our internal conservation department.”

Samuel’s eyes narrowed. “You mean Marcus Vale.”

Marcus stood near the black doors, his expression too neutral. He was Victoria’s registrar, restoration manager and the only employee authorized to open the acquisition vault.

Victoria insisted the panel had arrived in a sealed climate case that morning. She said Eleanor had been seen near the pedestal during setup. She suggested the older woman’s gloves had been prepared in advance because she intended to handle the glass.

Eleanor listened without interruption.

Then she removed one glove and showed the faded scars across her thumb and forefinger—thin white lines left by decades of cutting glass.

“I carry gloves in my pocket because I restore the chapel windows at St. Luke’s every Thursday,” she said. “Your staff knows that. They asked me to repair a cracked transom last month.”

Daniel turned toward Marcus. “Is that true?”

Marcus hesitated. “Yes.”

The crowd shifted.

Noah tugged Samuel’s sleeve and whispered that he had filmed the entire ribbon-cutting. In his footage, the panel was already on display before Eleanor entered the hall. More importantly, his camera had captured Marcus carrying a long black case through the side corridor twenty minutes earlier.

Samuel asked to see it.

Victoria objected immediately. “We are not turning a child’s video into evidence.”

Noah’s mother moved beside him. “You were happy to have him film your ceremony.”

Daniel ordered the exterior doors locked until the board understood what had happened. Victoria’s composure cracked for the first time.

“No one has the authority to detain my guests.”

“This is not detention,” Daniel said. “It is preservation of a potential crime scene.”

Near the pedestal, Eleanor studied the fake panel again. A bead of clear adhesive gleamed beneath the lower lead curve.

Fresh adhesive.

Less than a day old.
