A Camera No One Respected

Chapter 07 - A Camera No One Respected
Noah Bennett had been ignored for most of the evening.
Adults stepped in front of his lens, asked him to move chairs and told him not to touch the dessert table. Victoria had called his camera “adorable” before the ceremony and suggested he capture the applause.
Now Detective Ortiz sat beside him in the empty coatroom and reviewed every minute.
At 4:47 p.m., Marcus entered through the loading dock carrying the black case.
At 5:03, Victoria joined him in the conservation room.
At 5:19, Marcus left with the case again, but this time he wore a gray delivery jacket and cap. He exited through the side door while a catering truck blocked the security camera’s view.
At 5:24, he returned without the case.
Noah had filmed all of it accidentally while recording a time-lapse of the hall decorations.
Ortiz paused on the gray jacket. A circular patch had been removed, but adhesive marks remained. She asked the caterer whether the man belonged to his staff. The caterer said no.
Then Noah found the most important frame.
As Marcus crossed the loading dock, the side pocket of his jacket opened. A white envelope slipped partly out. On it was a handwritten address and the words “7:30—private terminal.”
Ortiz enlarged the image.
The address belonged to Halden Airfield, twenty miles outside town.
It was already 7:08.
Police units were dispatched before Victoria’s attorneys could object. Marcus, hearing the radio call, sank into a chair.
Victoria remained standing.
“You have no proof that anything is at the airfield,” she said.
Ortiz studied her. “I did not say what we expected to find there.”
Victoria’s jaw tightened.
Noah looked down at his camera, suddenly aware that every adult in the room was looking at him differently. Eleanor sat beside him and asked why he had kept filming when the argument began.
“My dad says people change when they know a camera is on,” Noah answered. “So I try to catch the moment before they notice.”
Eleanor smiled sadly. “That is when the truth usually enters the room.”
At 7:26, Ortiz received a call.
A private jet had been held on the runway. In its climate-controlled cargo compartment, officers had found a long black shipping crate addressed to a collector in Geneva.

Inside was a triangular object wrapped in white conservation paper.
A copper swallow pressed faintly against the wrapping.
