Chapter 12 - Claire’s Story

Claire finally agreed to speak after prosecutors charged her with kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment, child endangerment, and administering controlled substances.

She requested Mara.

In the interview room, Claire appeared smaller than she had at the house. Her hair was gray at the roots. Without the robe, the staged home, and the rehearsed maternal concern, she looked like a tired woman who had spent years building a lie large enough to live inside.

“My daughter’s name was Emma,” she said.

Mara remained silent.

“She drowned while my husband was supposed to watch her. Everyone expected me to continue living as though the world had not ended.”

“And Rourke offered you another child.”

“He said Sophie had been abandoned.”

“You saw missing posters with her face.”

Claire looked down.

“He said the posters were part of a custody conflict.”

“Sophie told you her mother was searching.”

“She was six. Children repeat what they are taught.”

Mara placed the recording of the 911 call on the table. Sophie’s whisper filled the room: Please come before she finds the phone.

Claire closed her eyes.

“You knew,” Mara said. “Every locked door, every sedative, every punishment proves you knew.”

Claire began crying.

For a moment, Mara saw genuine grief. But grief did not transform captivity into love.

“Where did Lucy go?” Mara asked.

“Rourke said she was disruptive.”

“You watched a man carry her away.”

“I was afraid.”

“So was Sophie. She called anyway.”

Claire’s tears stopped.

Mara understood then that Claire’s deepest resentment was not that Sophie had lied or betrayed her. It was that a child she considered powerless had acted with more courage than she had.

Before leaving, Mara said, “Emma was your daughter. Sophie is Laura’s daughter. Loving the first did not give you the right to steal the second.”

Claire lowered her head.
