Chapter 14 - Sophie Takes the Stand
Claire’s trial began ten months after the rescue.
The defense argued that Claire had been deceived by Rourke and believed Sophie was legally placed with her. They portrayed the locked doors and medication as desperate attempts to manage a traumatized child.
Prosecutors had videos, forged documents, and Claire’s own messages.
Still, Sophie’s experience mattered.
The judge allowed her to testify by recorded interview in a separate room with a child specialist. She could stop at any time.
Laura told her she did not have to participate.
Sophie asked, “Will she say I wanted to stay?”
“She might.”
“Then I want the jury to hear me.”
During the interview, Sophie described being forced to answer to Emma. She described Claire showing her photographs of a dead child and punishing her when she forgot details. She described Lucy teaching her how to hide the phone.
The specialist asked why she had called at 11:47.
“Because the lady officer worked on Tuesdays,” Sophie said. “Lucy saw her car before. She said the lady looked at children when they talked.”
Mara watched from the courtroom gallery and felt tears rise.
The defense attorney asked whether Claire ever hugged her, cooked for her, or bought her gifts.
“Yes,” Sophie said.
“Did that make you think she loved you?”
Sophie looked confused by the question.
“She said love meant I had to forget my other mommy.”
“And what do you think love means now?”
Sophie glanced toward Laura behind the camera.
“Love lets you remember.”
No closing argument could match those four words.
The jury convicted Claire on every count.
At sentencing, Claire turned toward Sophie but was stopped by the judge before speaking directly to her.
She received thirty-five years in prison.
