The Girl Named Lucy

Chapter 04 - The Girl Named Lucy
Detective Jonah Reed took over the criminal investigation, but Mara remained involved because Sophie would speak only when she was present.
In a quiet hospital room, Sophie explained that Lucy had lived in the house before her.
“She was smaller,” Sophie said. “She had yellow hair and a purple coat.”
“Where is Lucy now?” Reed asked.
Sophie looked toward the ceiling.
“The bad room.”
Rachel Vale’s house had already been searched, but officers found no second child. The basement contained laundry machines, storage boxes, and a locked cabinet filled with children’s clothing in different sizes. There were no photographs of Lucy and no record that any other child had lived there.
“What is the bad room?” Mara asked.
Sophie drew a square beneath the picture of the pink bedroom. Then she drew a narrow line connecting it to the closet.
Reed returned to the house with a forensic team.
Behind the bedroom closet, investigators discovered a removable wall panel painted to match the trim. It opened into a narrow stairwell descending between the walls. At the bottom was a windowless room containing a mattress, plastic restraints, an old television, and a child’s purple coat.
Lucy was not there.
On the wall, someone had scratched seven vertical marks into the paint.
The team also found a camera system recording every room in the house. Most drives had been removed, but one backup unit remained inside the attic insulation. Its earliest footage showed Rachel bringing Sophie into the house eighteen months earlier.
Later recordings showed another girl with blond hair.
Lucy.
Three weeks before Sophie made the 911 call, the footage showed a man entering through the garage. He carried Lucy out in a blanket while Rachel watched.
The man’s face was hidden beneath a cap, but a distinctive silver ring was visible on his right hand.
Sophie recognized it immediately.
“Doctor Evan,” she whispered.
Laura turned toward the detective. “Who is Doctor Evan?”
Sophie’s expression went blank, the way children sometimes vanished inside themselves when memory became too painful.
“He teaches the new mommies what to say.”
Reed stopped writing.
This was no longer a single abduction by a disturbed woman.

Someone had created false families, false medical records, and false identities.
And somewhere beyond Rachel Vale’s house, another little girl was still waiting to be found.
