Chapter 09 - The Child No One Missed

The child’s name was Noah Price.

He was ten years old and lived in a temporary group home after his mother died of an overdose. His father was unknown. The home reported him as attending an overnight educational trip, but no such trip existed.

The director had received forty thousand dollars from a Rourke company.

Noah had disappeared forty-eight hours earlier, yet no missing-person report had been filed.

Mara stared at his intake photograph. He wore a red sweatshirt and looked away from the camera, as if already accustomed to adults deciding his future without asking.

Danner said the delivery would occur on Gull Island, an abandoned private resort twenty miles offshore. Rourke planned to exchange Noah for cash and forged documents, then leave the country.

The Coast Guard found Rourke’s cruiser traveling without lights shortly after midnight.

When patrol boats approached, the cruiser accelerated toward shallow rocks. Officers saw a child on the rear deck before Rourke pulled him inside.

A helicopter illuminated the vessel.

Rourke transmitted a message over marine radio.

“Back away or the boy goes overboard.”

Negotiators kept him talking while tactical officers approached from the dark side of the boat. Mara listened from the command vessel. She could not see Noah, but she heard his frightened breathing over the radio.

Rourke demanded safe passage.

Then a child’s voice interrupted him.

“You said they were all bad.”

A struggle followed.

The radio went silent.

Tactical officers boarded seconds later. They found Noah locked inside the forward cabin and Rourke attempting to burn a leather-bound ledger in the galley sink. Water from a broken pipe had soaked the pages before they could ignite.

Rourke was arrested without injury.

The family book contained photographs and new identities for twenty-three children.

Seven had already been returned home through misleading legal processes that concealed what had happened. Nine remained missing. Three entries were marked deceased. Four, including Sophie, Lucy, and Noah, were now safe.

Mara looked at the pages until the names blurred.
