One Year Later

Chapter 18 - One Year Later
One year after the rescue, Sophie asked to return to the red-door house.
The property had been seized and scheduled for demolition. Investigators had removed the cameras, locks, and hidden-room evidence, but the pink bedroom remained.
Laura worried the visit would reopen wounds.
Sophie’s therapist believed it could help if Sophie controlled every part of the experience.
Mara met them at the front door.
Sophie entered holding Laura’s hand. She walked down the hallway where Claire had followed Mara that night. At the bedroom threshold, she stopped.
The room looked smaller.
The white bed was gone. Pale rectangles marked where furniture and evidence had been removed. The star projector no longer moved across the ceiling.
Sophie touched the wall panel leading to the hidden stairs.
“Lucy was down there,” she said.
“Yes,” Mara replied.
“And you believed me.”
“Yes.”
Sophie looked at the corner where she had sat hugging her knees.
“I thought you would turn around and ask her if it was true.”
Mara felt the weight of the sentence.
“Why?”
“Grown-ups always ask the other grown-up.”
Mara knelt beside her.
“I am sorry other people taught you that.”
Sophie placed an envelope on the floor. Inside was a drawing of the room with its door wide open. Two girls stood outside beneath a bright sun.
“For the next kid,” she said.
The demolition crew later found the drawing and gave it to the new child-protection center built on the site. It was framed in the lobby.
The red door was preserved.
