Rachel Vale Did Not Exist

Chapter 05 - Rachel Vale Did Not Exist

The woman arrested at the house was not Rachel Vale.

Her fingerprints identified her as Claire Voss, a former pediatric nurse whose eight-year-old daughter had died in a boating accident six years earlier. After the death, Claire’s marriage ended. She disappeared from public records and later reemerged under several names.

The house, bank account, and vehicle were registered through companies connected to a private adoption consultant named Dr. Evan Rourke.

Rourke had never attended medical school.

He operated a network of “family recovery programs,” promising desperate adults confidential access to children who supposedly needed new homes. Some clients believed they were participating in illegal adoptions. Others knew exactly what they were buying.

When detectives searched Rourke’s office, it was empty.

His computers had been removed, files burned, and security cameras disabled. On one wall remained a faded outline where a large map had recently hung.

Claire refused to answer questions.

She sat across from Reed in an interview room, her hands folded neatly on the table.

“You drugged Sophie,” Reed said.

“I helped Emma sleep.”

“Her name is Sophie.”

“She became Sophie again because that police officer rewarded her delusion.”

Reed placed a photograph of Lucy on the table.

Claire’s eyes flickered.

“Where is she?”

“I have never seen that child.”

“We have video.”

“Then you already know more than I do.”

Mara watched from behind the glass. Claire did not speak like someone afraid of prison. She spoke like someone certain the larger truth would never be found.

Reed changed tactics.

“Rourke abandoned you. He cleared his office before your arrest.”

For the first time, Claire’s fingers tightened.

“He would not.”

“He did.”

Claire looked toward the mirrored glass, somehow sensing Mara behind it.

“You think Sophie called because she was brave?” Claire said. “She called because someone told her exactly when.”

Mara entered the room.

“Who?”

Claire smiled.

“The person you should be questioning is the one who knew your patrol route, your response time, and which officer would answer a silent call.”

Mara felt cold.

The dispatcher had sent her directly, even though another unit had been closer.

Someone inside the emergency system had wanted Mara at that house.

The question was whether they wanted Sophie rescued—

or Mara drawn into a trap.
