The Tape Nobody Knew Existed

Chapter 13 - The Tape Nobody Knew Existed
Maya examined the recovered analog recorder.
The tape compartment was empty, but scratches showed it had been removed after the wedding.
Only four people knew the camera existed.
Maya.
Evan.
The hotel owner.
Simone Vale.
Simone remained missing.
Her last bank withdrawal occurred in a coastal town two hours away. Rivera found her at a bus station carrying cash and a passport issued under another name.
She surrendered when she learned Adrian had abandoned her.
“I did not know he would throw the boy,” she said.
“You drugged his drink,” Rivera replied.
“I used half the amount.”
The sentence destroyed any claim of innocence.
Simone had removed the analog tape before the digital server was stolen. Adrian ordered her to burn it.
She did not.
Insurance, she called it.
She hid the tape inside the wedding cake’s decorative base before leaving the hotel.
The cake had been moved to cold storage after the ceremony collapsed.
Maya found the tape sealed inside plastic beneath a sugar rose.
The old camera faced the altar through the gilded clock.
Its microphone captured sound more clearly than camera fourteen.
At 3:31 p.m., before guests entered, Adrian stood with Lucas and Simone near the floral arch.
He rehearsed the sequence.
Simone would give Noah the altered juice.
She would place the boutonnière pin in his pocket.
Adrian would accuse the boy of stabbing him.
The public incident would support the Redmont placement and Claire’s psychological evaluation.
“If Claire hesitates at the adoption papers?” Simone asked.
Adrian laughed.
“She has spent five years terrified of losing another man. By sunset, she will sign anything that keeps the room from leaving her.”
Then Margaret entered frame.
She had heard the final sentence.
For several seconds, she stood unseen behind the arch.
She could have warned Claire.
Instead, she stepped backward and walked away.
The recording continued through the ceremony.
Noah approached Adrian and whispered, “I have Dad’s letter.”
Adrian grabbed his jacket.
Noah tried to run toward Claire.
Adrian lifted him by the arms and threw him down.
No bite.
No attack.
No accident.
The guests gasped.
Then the hidden microphone captured Adrian bending over the child.
“You just lost your mother.”
The sentence had not appeared in any public video.
Claire watched once.
She refused to watch again.

The tape did not change what happened.
It changed what could be denied.
