Margaret avoided prison after pleading guilty, surrendering her board positions, paying restitution, and cooperating with the hospital investigation.
The judge sentenced her to home confinement and community service.
She requested supervised visits with Noah.
Claire allowed Noah’s therapist to decide whether the request should be presented to him.
Noah said no.
Margaret wrote letters instead.
The first apologized for “mistakes made under pressure.”
Claire returned it.
The second apologized for choosing the foundation over his safety.
Noah read it but did not reply.
The third contained no apology.
It described the yellow tulips blooming outside her window and said she would wait without demanding an answer.
Noah kept that one.
One afternoon, months later, he asked to see her from the car.
Claire drove to the Bennett estate.
Margaret stood behind the iron gate wearing no makeup and no tailored suit.
Noah lowered the window.
“Did you know he was going to throw me?”
Margaret gripped the bars.
“No.”
“Did you know he wanted me gone?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell Mom?”
“Because I thought the wedding would save things I was afraid to lose.”
Noah considered this.
“You lost them anyway.”
“Yes.”
He raised the window.
The visit lasted less than two minutes.
