The Trial of Adrian Cross

Chapter 15 - The Trial of Adrian Cross

Adrian’s trial began eleven months after the wedding.

He wore a gray suit without a tie.

The defense claimed business pressure, family conflict, and one moment of lost control. They tried to separate the throw from the financial conspiracy.

The tape made separation impossible.

Rachel Cole testified about Eli.

Lucas testified about Cross Meridian.

Simone described the altered juice and planted pin.

Margaret testified last.

She admitted she heard Adrian’s threat before the ceremony and chose not to stop it because canceling the wedding would collapse the land deal.

“Did you believe he would hurt Noah?” the prosecutor asked.

“I believed he would frighten him.”

“Is that better?”

Margaret looked at Claire across the room.

“No.”

Claire testified for two days.

The defense asked why she ignored warning signs.

She answered honestly.

“I wanted the relationship to be safe, so I interpreted evidence in the way that protected what I wanted.”

“Then you were mistaken about Mr. Cross before. Why should the jury trust your judgment now?”

“They should not convict him because I changed my mind. They should convict him because the recording shows what he did.”

Noah did not appear in open court.

A child specialist recorded his statement privately. He described the corridor, the threat, and the fall.

When asked what he remembered most, he said, “Mom came to me before she went to him.”

The jury deliberated for nine hours.

Adrian was convicted on every major count.

He received twenty-three years in prison.

At sentencing, he looked at Claire.

“You ruined your son’s inheritance.”

Claire shook her head.

“No. I taught him he was worth more than it.”
