Noah’s toy watch had not worked for years.
Michael gave it to him on his second birthday. It looked like a blue plastic spaceship and recorded ten-second voice messages when the side button was pressed.
Claire had kept it in a memory box after Michael died.
Adrian found it while moving into the house and gave it back to Noah, joking that old toys were cheaper than therapy.
Noah wore it to the wedding because he wanted his father “near the rings.”
At June’s office, he placed it on the table.
“I pressed the button when Adrian took me into the hallway.”
The battery was dead.
Evan Cho replaced it carefully and connected the watch to an offline computer.
Nine audio files appeared.
Most contained toddler laughter and Michael saying, “Captain Noah, prepare for launch.”
The final file was recorded on the wedding day.
Adrian’s voice came first.
“Once she signs, the trust transfer begins.”
Lucas answered.
“Claire can still block the hospital sale.”
“Not after the evaluation.”
“What evaluation?”
“The one proving she cannot manage the child or the assets.”
A pause.
Then Simone spoke.
“And the boy?”
“Redmont. The incident today will make the decision look necessary.”
Noah’s breathing was audible.
Adrian noticed.
“What are you doing here?”
The recording became muffled.
Then came the threat camera fourteen had captured.
Adults believe the man in the suit before they believe the child crying on the floor.
The file ended with Noah whispering one sentence.
“Dad was right about you.”
Claire looked at him.
“What did you mean?”
Noah reached into the lining of his sling and removed a folded page.
He had torn it from the blue file before hiding the rest.
It was a handwritten letter from Michael.
Claire,
Adrian Cross will not stop at the land. He studies people until he knows which fear will make them cooperate. Do not let him convince you that control is protection. If Noah ever tells you he is afraid, believe him before you investigate why.
Claire could no longer see the page clearly.
Michael had written the warning before Noah could speak in full sentences.
She had been given the answer years earlier.

June sealed the watch as evidence.
Rivera obtained warrants for Adrian, Lucas, and Simone’s financial records.
