Elena Refuses the Palace Apartment

Chapter 14 - Elena Refuses the Palace Apartment

Adrian offered Elena a private apartment inside the royal residence so she could remain near Clara.

She declined.

The palace contained locked corridors, uniforms, and footsteps that still triggered memories.

Instead, she chose a modest house near Clara’s school.

Security arrangements were controlled jointly by Elena, Adrian, and an independent child advocate.

Clara spent scheduled nights there.

The first evening, she asked why the house had no servants.

“Because I know how to make soup,” Elena said.

The soup burned.

Clara laughed until she cried.

They learned one another through ordinary life.

Elena discovered Clara hated peas and feared thunder.

Clara learned Elena sang while cleaning and became silent near hospitals.

Motherhood did not return through DNA alone.

It grew through breakfast, boundaries, missed cues, apologies, and repetition.

Adrian visited only when invited.

He and Elena spoke about the past without treating lost love as a command to reunite.

They still cared for each other.

Care did not erase betrayal committed around them or years lived separately.

Their first responsibility was Clara’s safety, not producing a romantic ending for the public.

At Elena’s house, Clara learned to wash dishes, choose groceries, and answer the door without a servant announcing visitors.

Palace advisers worried the experiences were inappropriate for an heir.

Adrian disagreed.

Clara needed to understand labor not as background movement but as human effort.

Elena also set limits.

Clara could not order security staff to carry toys simply because they worked for her. She had to ask, and they could refuse when the request was unrelated to safety.

The rules surprised her.

Then they comforted her.

A world where adults could say no safely felt more trustworthy than a palace where everyone smiled and obeyed while hiding the truth.
