Chapter 17 - The First Public Appearance

Clara asked Elena to attend the spring children’s concert.

Palace advisers prepared a seating chart placing Elena behind distant relatives.

Clara moved the name card herself.

She placed Elena beside Adrian and Sophia’s parents.

The arrangement caused headlines before the music began.

During the concert, Clara performed the four-note lullaby on piano.

She made one mistake and stopped.

Elena hummed the next note from the audience.

Clara continued.

No speech followed.

The moment did not require explanation.

Sophia’s parents later thanked Elena for allowing their daughter’s role to remain visible.

Elena answered honestly.

“I am not always generous about it.”

“You do not have to be.”

Their relationship developed slowly, built around shared love for Clara and different griefs neither could solve for the other.

The royal family photograph after the concert included Elena.

It also included Sophia’s portrait on the program table.

No one was erased to make the image simple.

The concert became the first time Elena entered the ballroom without a tray.

Her hands still moved instinctively whenever a glass needed refilling.

A senior attendant gently told her, “You are a guest tonight.”

The word felt strange.

Elena looked around at former coworkers wearing the same uniform she once wore. She asked that they be included in the reception photograph and receive seats after service.

The palace initially planned a separate staff meal downstairs.

Clara objected.

“If the concert is about family, the people who worked all day should eat where the music happened.”

The policy changed.

One child’s recognition continued exposing traditions adults had mistaken for natural order.
