Adrian’s Abdication Threat

Chapter 15 - Adrian’s Abdication Threat

A group of nobles demanded Elena be permanently excluded from public royal events.

They feared her presence reminded citizens of the scandal.

Adrian called an emergency council.

“If Clara’s mother is hidden to preserve the monarchy, I will renounce my place in it.”

The room erupted.

Advisers warned that abdication could trigger elections and end centuries of tradition.

Adrian remained calm.

“You are asking my daughter to learn the same lesson Beatrice taught us: that truth may exist privately but must disappear from photographs.”

The council withdrew the demand.

Elena heard about the threat and confronted him.

“Do not use me as a reason to abandon responsibility.”

“I was protecting you.”

“You were making a decision that would reshape Clara’s life without asking either of us.”

Adrian recognized the pattern.

Even protective gestures could become control when made alone.

He apologized.

They created a family council including Clara’s advocate before major constitutional decisions affecting her.

The reform sounded bureaucratic.

It prevented love from becoming unilateral power.

Adrian’s abdication threat leaked to the press and made him popular.

Elena disliked the praise.

“People are applauding a decision you never had to carry out,” she said.

He realized dramatic declarations could create moral credit before practical work occurred.

He withdrew from interviews and focused on the family council, employee protections, and constitutional bills already underway.

Clara later asked whether he would truly give up the throne for Elena.

Adrian answered, “I would give it up rather than participate in hiding her.”

Elena added, “But he should ask us before making our lives part of that choice.”

Clara nodded.

Even noble sacrifice could become controlling if others were used as the reason without being included.
