Chapter 07 - The Blood Test
The royal council demanded independent DNA testing.
Samples were collected by three laboratories in separate countries.
Clara hated the procedure.
Elena sat beside her and allowed the nurse to draw her blood first.
“If you are brave, I will be brave,” Clara said.
“No,” Elena answered. “You are allowed to be frightened even if I am frightened too.”
Adrian watched the exchange.
Beatrice had raised him to perform courage whenever others were looking. Elena was teaching Clara that truth did not require pretending.
The results arrived four days later.
Probability of maternity between Elena Maren and Clara Arden: 99.9998 percent.
Probability of paternity between Adrian Arden and Clara: 99.9999 percent.
The council chamber fell silent.
Clara remained the prince’s biological daughter and constitutional heir.
But the official birth certificate naming Sophia as her biological mother was false.
The government ordered it corrected while preserving Sophia’s legal status as adoptive mother.
News leaked within an hour.
Crowds gathered outside the palace.
Some carried signs supporting Elena.
Others demanded she be removed.
Royal commentators debated whether a former maid could appear beside the heir.
Elena refused every interview.
“I spent seven years without my child,” she told Adrian. “I will not spend the next seven explaining myself to strangers.”
The palace offered her a title.
She declined.
“I want access to Clara, legal recognition, and the truth. I do not want a decorative rank designed to make me acceptable.”
Adrian respected the answer.
For the first time, someone inside the royal family rejected status without treating rejection as insult.
Clara asked whether the blood test could tell which mother loved her more.
The laboratory doctor looked helpless.
Elena answered.
“No test can measure that.”
“Then why does everyone care about the numbers?”
“Because adults wrote laws around them.”
Clara thought about this.
“Can laws be wrong?”
“Yes.”
Adrian watched his daughter process in minutes what generations of advisers avoided discussing.
The test established biology.
It did not determine relationships, grief, or responsibility.
Sophia’s parents feared Elena’s recognition would erase their connection to Clara. Elena proposed regular visits without waiting for the court.
“They lost a daughter,” she said. “Clara should not lose grandparents because adults are frightened of sharing love.”
