The Second DNA Sample

Chapter 14 - The Second DNA Sample

Federal agents stopped the jet before takeoff. Regina claimed she was taking Celeste away from media harassment, but authorities found cash, bearer bonds, and a drive containing trust documents in her luggage.

Celeste insisted she knew nothing about the money. For once, her fear looked larger than her pride.

At the hospital, a second independent laboratory confirmed that Amelia was Elena’s biological mother. The result removed the last legal shadow over Elena’s identity, but it could not repair the stolen years.

Amelia woke from a nightmare calling for Samuel. Vivienne sat beside her and finally told her that he had died after the crash.

For a long time, Amelia said nothing.

“I thought he stopped looking for me,” she whispered.

“He never stopped,” Vivienne said. “Police records show he visited every hospital in three counties. He died carrying your photograph.”

Amelia turned her face toward the wall.

Elena held her hand. “He found me in one way. They gave me his surname.”

Later, Vivienne asked Elena to walk with her in the hospital garden.

“The trust names Amelia’s legitimate children as primary heirs,” she said. “That means you now control the voting shares I intended to give Celeste.”

Elena stopped. “I do not know how to control a hotel empire.”

“Neither did I at twenty-six.”

“I was serving dinner four days ago.”

“And you noticed which staff had not eaten, which guests were cruel, and which doors powerful people used when they did not want to be seen. Those are management skills no university teaches.”

Elena looked up at the hospital windows. “I will not take anything while my mother is still learning what year it is.”

“You do not have to decide now.”

A nurse approached with a package delivered to Amelia. There was no return address. Inside lay one final paper bird and a typed note.

The dead are safer than the remembered.

Thomas examined the bird. Its paper came from Hawthorne board stationery.

Someone inside the company was still protecting Regina.

And the next board meeting was scheduled for the following morning.
