A Name Buried in Ashes

Chapter 03 - A Name Buried in Ashes

The gala continued, but no one listened to the quartet or tasted the food. Guests gathered in whispering circles while reporters waited outside the gates. The announcement of Celeste’s inheritance was postponed, and that alone felt like an earthquake beneath the family.

Elena sat in the small office beside the pantry while Thomas Reed asked questions. Beatrice remained close, one hand on Elena’s shoulder.

“What do you remember about your childhood?” Thomas asked.

“Different houses. Different last names. The state called me Elena Marlowe after the nurse who signed my intake form.”

“Before that?”

“Nothing clear. A song. A woman humming near water. The smell of lavender.”

Thomas opened a leather folder. “Your earliest file begins at St. Agnes Children’s Home. The building burned when you were three months old. Most paper records were destroyed.”

Elena stared at him. “So there is no birth certificate?”

“There is one, but it was filed late. The mother’s name is blank.”

Vivienne stood by the window, holding Amelia’s locket. “St. Agnes received donations from the Vale Foundation that year.”

The name struck the room silent.

Regina Vale appeared in the doorway. “My late husband donated to dozens of charities.”

Vivienne did not turn. “Your husband was also the last person who saw Amelia alive.”

Regina’s face tightened. “Gregory tried to save her from that reckless musician she married in secret.”

Elena looked between them. “My mother was married?”

Vivienne finally faced her. “To a man named Samuel Marlowe.”

The surname seemed to open a locked door inside Elena’s chest. Marlowe was the name the state had said was randomly assigned. Now it belonged to a man who might have been her father.

Thomas made a note. “Samuel died two weeks after Amelia vanished. A hit-and-run driver was never found.”

Beatrice crossed herself.

Regina folded her arms. “Coincidence is not evidence.”

“No,” Thomas said. “But a pattern can become evidence.”

A medical technician arrived through the service entrance carrying sealed kits. Vivienne gave a cheek swab without hesitation. Elena did the same, though her hands shook.

When the technician left, Celeste entered. She had removed the tiara, but fury still made her posture regal.

“You came into this house knowing exactly what you were doing,” she said to Elena. “You waited until tonight because you wanted an audience.”

Elena rose. “I came here because I needed a job.”

Celeste moved closer. “Then remember that you are still an employee until a piece of paper says otherwise.”

Vivienne’s cane struck the floor once.

“No,” she said. “Until the truth arrives, Elena is my guest.”

For the first time in her life, Elena heard someone powerful place protection between her and humiliation.

It frightened her almost as much as hope.
