Chapter 16 - Mother and Daughter

Elena left Amelia only after a police officer was stationed at the door. Celeste rode with her to Hawthorne headquarters, both women silent in the back seat.

“You do not have to forgive me,” Celeste said.

“I do not.”

Celeste nodded as though the bluntness hurt less than kindness. “But I can help you stop Sloan.”

At the tower, executives crowded the boardroom beneath a wall-sized portrait of Vivienne’s late husband. Sloan stood at the head of the table with a stack of documents. He announced that Vivienne’s “emotional instability” had endangered shareholders and proposed an emergency vote to remove her as chair.

Regina appeared by video from federal custody through her attorney. She denied every allegation and called Amelia’s memories unreliable.

Then Elena entered in her gray maid’s uniform.

Cameras turned.

Sloan smiled. “This is a corporate meeting, not the service entrance.”

Elena walked to the empty chair beside Vivienne. “For years, people used service entrances because they thought no one important watched them. That is how I learned who carried sealed envelopes to Regina’s car.”

Beatrice had provided household logs. Noah had matched dates with bank transfers. Thomas placed the evidence before each director.

Sloan reached for the metal case. Agents stepped from the corridor and ordered him away from it.

Inside were forged trust amendments designed to transfer voting control to a holding company owned by Regina. There was also a portable drive containing deleted emails between Sloan, Gregory, and Lakeview.

Celeste stood before the board. “My mother ordered me to discredit Elena. She said the company would be mine if I obeyed. I will testify to every instruction.”

Regina’s image froze for a second. Then her attorney ended the call.

The board voted unanimously to suspend Sloan and recognize Elena’s legal status pending final trust review.

Afterward, reporters surrounded Elena in the lobby. She could have worn a designer suit. She could have hidden the uniform that reminded everyone where she began.

Instead, she faced the cameras in gray.

“This uniform is not evidence that I belonged beneath anyone,” she said. “It is evidence that dignity can be ignored, but it cannot be erased.”

At the hospital, Amelia watched the broadcast and placed one hand over her heart.

“My daughter,” she whispered, this time not as a question.
