The Envelope at Midnight

Chapter 06 - The Envelope at Midnight

Thomas unfolded three pages, but only one line mattered.

“The probability that Vivienne Hawthorne is the biological maternal grandmother of Elena Marlowe is ninety-nine point nine eight percent.”

Silence swallowed the room.

Elena heard the rain against the windows. The distant tick of the clock. Her own breathing, too fast and too shallow.

Thomas continued. “The result is scientifically conclusive.”

Vivienne’s face crumpled. For decades she had been photographed during hostile takeovers, congressional hearings, and the funerals of people she loved. No camera had ever captured her without control. Now she crossed the room with both hands shaking.

“May I hold you?” she asked.

Elena had never been asked that before. Foster parents had pulled her close for photographs and pushed her away when placements ended. Social workers had touched her shoulder while explaining why another home had failed. No one had asked.

She nodded.

Vivienne wrapped her arms around her. Elena stood rigid for one heartbeat, then collapsed against the old woman’s silver dress. A sound tore from her that she did not recognize. Vivienne held the back of her head and wept into her hair.

“My granddaughter,” she whispered. “My Amelia’s child.”

Behind them, Celeste stared as though the floor had vanished.

Regina recovered first. “A grandmother match does not prove the circumstances of her birth. There could be another branch of the family.”

Thomas placed the second page on the table. “We also compared Elena’s sample to a preserved blood card from Amelia’s pregnancy records. The probability of a biological mother-daughter relationship is greater than ninety-nine point nine percent.”

Regina’s lips parted.

Vivienne turned, still holding Elena. “You knew Amelia was pregnant. You knew the hospital. You knew the charities connected to St. Agnes.”

“I knew what everyone knew.”

“Then you will not object to an investigation.”

Celeste finally spoke. “What happens to me?”

Vivienne looked at the young woman she had raised beside her. “That depends on what you do next.”

Celeste’s eyes shifted to Elena’s cheek. Shame flickered there, but envy buried it.

Thomas collected the papers. “Until the succession question is reviewed, all trust amendments are frozen.”

Regina’s composure shattered for half a second.

That half second was enough for Elena to understand something terrible.

This was not merely a family revelation.

Someone had been waiting twenty-six years to make certain the true heir never returned.
