The Voice in the Safe

Chapter 18 - The Voice in the Safe
Regina sat behind reinforced glass in the detention center, stripped of emerald silk and diamonds. Without the architecture of wealth around her, she looked smaller, but not softer.
“You came to hear an apology,” she said through the phone.
“No. I came to hear whether there is any truth left in you.”
Regina studied Elena’s face. “You look more like Amelia when you are angry.”
“Why did you do it?”
“Because your family worshiped blood while pretending merit mattered. Gregory built half the company, yet Vivienne’s trust would have given everything to Amelia and her musician’s child.”
“So you erased us.”
“I corrected a design.”
Elena felt the old instinct to make herself small. She resisted it.
“You locked my mother inside a false name. You let my father die. You left me to grow up believing I had been abandoned.”
Regina leaned closer to the glass. “And now you are stronger than Celeste ever was.”
“That is not credit you get to claim.”
For the first time, Regina’s expression changed.
Elena placed the phone back on its hook and walked away before the woman could turn cruelty into one more lesson.
At Hawthorne Hall, Thomas opened a safe hidden behind the portrait of Vivienne’s husband. Sloan’s drive contained the combination. Inside were original trust documents and a final audio message recorded by Vivienne’s husband shortly before his death.
“If Amelia or her child returns,” his voice said, “the company must not become their cage. Wealth is not proof of virtue. Let the heir choose whether to lead, divide, or leave.”
Vivienne covered her mouth.
The message meant Elena could reject control without losing her inheritance. It also invalidated the forged amendments Regina had used to groom Celeste as sole successor.
Elena listened twice.
“I will lead for one year,” she said. “Long enough to return what was stolen and rebuild the foundation. After that, the board chooses on performance, not blood.”
Vivienne’s eyes shone. “And if they choose you?”
“Then I will know I earned the chair after inheriting the chance.”
The family scheduled a dinner at Hawthorne Hall—not to crown an heir, but to welcome Amelia home.
The same ballroom would be used.

The same long table.
This time, no one would be invisible.
