CHAPTER 11: The West Archive

Richard ordered the west archive opened before the gala ended.

The archive was three floors below the ballroom, behind a steel door that required two access codes and a keycard. It was where the Alden Hotel Group stored old contracts, board minutes, donor correspondence, and secrets dressed as paperwork.

Vivian refused to go.

Officer Daniels made it clear she no longer had a choice.

Elena rode the elevator beside Richard, Marcus, two officers, and Charles. No guests were allowed. The ballroom remained sealed above them, buzzing with speculation. Down in the archive corridor, the air turned cold.

Charles walked like a man heading toward his own confession.

“Why did you let her keep them?” Richard asked.

Charles swallowed. “Because by the time I knew, Clara was gone. Vivian said bringing it up would destroy you.”

“Destroy me?”

“You were recovering from your second surgery. The board was unstable. The family trust was being rewritten.”

Richard closed his eyes. “So everyone protected my money from my child.”

Elena’s stomach turned.

My child.

Not Clara’s mistake. Not Vivian’s problem. Not a scandal.

A child.

Charles unlocked a cabinet marked Donor Relations 1989-1994. Behind folders and old event programs sat a thin metal box.

Vivian looked away as Marcus opened it.

Inside were letters tied with a faded ribbon.

Richard reached for the top envelope.

His own handwriting stared back at him.

Clara, please answer. If you are afraid, I will come quietly. If you are angry, I deserve it. But if the child is mine, I want to be there.

Elena pressed both hands to her mouth.

Richard read another, then another.

Money orders, never delivered.

Hospital discharge papers.

A note from Clara: Richard, I came to the hotel. Vivian told me you wanted nothing to do with us. I will not shame you again.

Richard sank into a chair.

Elena could not breathe.

Vivian whispered, “I did what had to be done.”

Richard looked up.

“No,” he said. “You did what served you.”

Officer Daniels sealed the box as evidence.

May you like

Elena touched the ribbon once before it disappeared into a bag.

It felt like touching the years stolen from her mother.
