CHAPTER 5: The Bag Under the Service Table

Security sealed the ballroom doors within minutes.
The guests did not like it.
Rich people hated waiting when they were not the reason for the delay.
A senator complained about optics. A hotel investor demanded his driver. A woman in silver said she felt unsafe standing near “evidence,” even though the only person shaking was Elena.
Richard ordered a linen cloth brought from the service station. He made no move to touch the jewelry again. Instead, he told security to photograph everything exactly as it lay.
Vivian laughed through her nose. “Now we are pretending this is a crime scene?”
“It is,” Richard said.
Elena watched him with confusion and fear. No one had defended her like this before. People had helped her occasionally, quietly, with small kindnesses they could deny later. A free meal. An extra shift. A bus pass. But no one had ever stopped a room full of millionaires for her.
The head of hotel security, Marcus Reed, arrived sweating through his collar.
“Mr. Alden, we can review the ballroom cameras, but it may take time.”
“Then take it.”
Vivian folded her arms. “This is absurd.”
Richard looked at Marcus. “Start with the service table. The bag was under it?”
Elena nodded.
“It was zipped,” she said. “I keep it there because we’re not allowed lockers during events.”
Marcus asked, “Who had access?”
Elena almost laughed. “Everyone important.”
A few guests shifted, offended by the accuracy.
Vivian snapped, “She is trying to smear the guests now.”
Richard ignored her. “Was the bag ever unattended?”
Elena closed her eyes, thinking. She had carried champagne to table twelve. Refilled water at table six. Helped another server near the dessert doors. Five minutes, maybe seven, with her bag out of sight.
“I was away,” she said quietly. “But I didn’t think—”
“Because you should not have had to,” Richard said.
That simple sentence nearly broke her.
Vivian saw the effect and stepped in. “Enough. Mr. Reed, remove her to a side room and call police. She can cry there.”
Richard’s reply came without hesitation.
“She stays where I can see her.”
The ballroom fell quiet again.
May you like
Elena lifted her eyes.
For the first time, Vivian looked afraid.
