CHAPTER 8: The Woman in Red

Vivian Whitmore was not finished.
People like her did not confess when cornered. They rearranged the room around their guilt.
“You fools,” she said, turning to the guests. “You are watching an old man be manipulated.”
A board member murmured, “Vivian…”
She snapped toward him. “Don’t.”
The warning revealed more than she intended.
For years, Vivian had controlled access to Richard Alden. She managed foundation dinners, donor invitations, family statements, press releases, scholarship announcements, and every piece of information that reached the public. She knew which scandals disappeared, which heirs stayed useful, which relatives were paid to remain quiet.
But she had never feared a maid.
Until tonight.
Richard stepped closer to her. “Why Elena?”
Vivian’s mouth curled. “Because she should never have been here.”
Elena flinched.
“Say what you mean,” Richard said.
Vivian looked at the photograph in his hand.
The truth came out not as regret but as resentment.
“I saw it two weeks ago.”
Elena blinked. “What?”
“At the hotel laundry entrance,” Vivian said. “You dropped your bag. That photo fell out. I recognized Clara immediately. Same eyes. Same pitiful look. I knew if Richard saw you, this entire ridiculous ghost story would start again.”
Richard’s voice dropped. “Again?”
Vivian’s nostrils flared.
Charles Whitmore stepped forward. “Vivian, stop talking.”
She turned on him. “You knew enough.”
The ballroom gasped.
Charles paled.
Elena looked between them, dizzy. “What did you do to my mother?”
Vivian lifted her chin.
“I protected an empire.”
Richard’s face went cold.
“You destroyed a family.”
“No,” Vivian said. “I protected your reputation when you were too weak to do it yourself. Clara was a nurse with no name, no money, no place in your world. If she had shown up pregnant, your board would have devoured you.”
Elena’s knees nearly failed.
Pregnant.
The word sliced through the room.
May you like
Richard whispered, “She was pregnant when you sent her away?”
Vivian’s silence answered first.
