CHAPTER 13: Vivian’s Last Performance

Vivian Whitmore gave her version of the story before sunrise.

Her attorney released a statement claiming she had been “emotionally overwhelmed” after discovering her jewelry missing and had “mistakenly placed items while seeking assistance.” It described Elena as “an employee connected to an unresolved personal matter involving Mr. Alden.”

It was poison wrapped in manners.

By noon, donors began calling Richard’s office.

By two, three board members suggested delaying the DNA test until the foundation could manage public response.

By three, Richard fired all three from their advisory roles.

Vivian arrived at the Alden Tower at 4:15 p.m., dressed in cream instead of red, as if innocence were a color she could put on.

She demanded a private meeting.

Richard agreed, but only with Grace Miller present and security recording.

Vivian entered smiling.

“Richard, this has gone too far.”

He remained behind his desk, the same desk from which he had built hotels across the country. On it lay copies of the letters, Clara’s note, and the security stills.

Vivian glanced at them and looked away.

“I made mistakes,” she said. “But I was protecting you.”

“From my child?”

“From ruin.”

“My child was not ruin.”

Vivian’s face tightened. “You say that now because you’re old and sentimental. Back then you were ambitious. The board would have replaced you. Your family would have turned on you. Clara would have been destroyed in public.”

“She was destroyed in private.”

Vivian’s mask slipped.

“She was beneath you.”

Richard stood.

Grace looked ready to intervene, but he only placed both hands on the desk.

“No,” he said. “She was beyond you.”

Vivian laughed, brittle and ugly. “And the maid? You think she wants a family? She wants a payout.”

The door opened.

Elena stood there.

She had heard enough.

“I want my mother’s letters,” she said. “I want her grave moved to where she asked to be buried. I want every lie you told written down and signed.”

Vivian stared at her.

“And then,” Elena added, “I want you to say her name without insulting her.”

May you like

Vivian’s mouth opened.

Nothing came out.
