CHAPTER 9: The Letter That Never Arrived

Elena had carried questions her entire life.

Why did her mother cry on birthdays? Why did she keep one man’s photograph hidden inside a Bible? Why did she refuse charity from anyone connected to Alden Hotels? Why did she sometimes sit beside the window and say, “Some doors close because someone locks them from the other side”?

Now the locked door had a name.

Vivian.

Richard gripped the back of a chair.

“I wrote to Clara,” he said. “For months after she disappeared. I sent money. I asked her to meet me. Vivian told me Clara returned everything unopened.”

Vivian looked away.

Elena’s voice cracked. “My mother worked double shifts until her feet swelled. She sold her wedding ring to pay rent.”

Richard turned as if struck. “Wedding ring?”

Elena nodded through tears. “She wore it on a chain. She said it was from the only man she ever loved.”

The old billionaire’s eyes filled.

“I gave her that ring.”

Vivian inhaled sharply.

Richard faced her. “Where are the letters?”

“I don’t know.”

“Vivian.”

“I said I don’t know.”

Charles’s face collapsed.

“They’re in the west archive,” he said.

Everyone turned.

Vivian stared at her husband with hatred.

Charles looked broken, but not innocent. “She kept them. The returned envelopes. The money orders. The hospital note. She said it was insurance.”

Richard’s voice became almost calm. “Insurance against what?”

Charles lowered his eyes. “Against Clara coming back.”

Elena stepped backward, shaking her head. “No.”

Richard reached for her, then stopped himself, giving her space.

Elena looked at Vivian. “You let my mother think he abandoned her.”

Vivian’s lips pressed together.

“She would have survived.”

Elena’s voice rose for the first time. “She did survive. She survived you. She raised me in rooms colder than your jewelry safe. She died still blaming herself for loving someone above her station.”

Vivian looked away.

Elena wiped her face.

“And tonight, you tried to make me die the same way. Ashamed. Alone. Believed by nobody.”

May you like

Richard bowed his head.

The ballroom, finally, had no whisper left.
