CHAPTER 4: Vivian’s Perfect Lie

Vivian Whitmore had spent thirty years inside rooms like this, and she knew one rule better than anyone: when truth begins to rise, bury it under outrage.

She turned toward the guests, lifting one jeweled hand. “Everyone, please. Mr. Alden is emotional. He’s been under stress. This girl is manipulating him with an old photograph.”

Elena flinched at girl.

Richard remained on one knee, holding the photo as if letting go would erase the woman inside it.

Vivian moved closer. Her perfume, sharp and expensive, reached Elena before her shadow did.

“Tell them the truth,” Vivian said. “Who gave you that picture? Which tabloid sent you? Was this a staged robbery? A stunt to get near Mr. Alden?”

Elena’s face crumpled.

“No. I don’t even know him.”

But that was no longer true.

Not completely.

Something in Richard’s face had shifted. Recognition had opened a door that none of them could close.

Vivian sensed it and became colder.

“I will press charges,” she said. “I will make sure every hotel in the city knows your name.”

Elena lowered her gaze to the pearls scattered like bones around her knees.

“I already know what people like you can do,” she whispered. “You don’t have to remind me.”

That sentence reached Richard.

He rose slowly with help from the edge of a banquet chair. “People like her?”

Vivian’s eyes flashed. “Richard, you are misunderstanding everything.”

“Am I?”

“Yes. You saw jewelry fall out of her bag. Everyone saw it.”

Richard turned to the security guard. “Where is the surveillance office?”

Vivian stiffened.

The guard hesitated. “Down the east corridor, sir.”

“Seal the doors.”

The ballroom erupted.

Vivian’s voice sharpened. “You cannot hold guests here over a maid’s sob story.”

Richard looked at her then, fully.

For decades, people had called him kind because he gave money away. Few remembered that he had built an empire by reading contracts, competitors, and liars. His eyes were old, but they were not weak.

“I am not holding them over a sob story,” he said. “I am holding them because someone planted stolen jewelry on a young woman in my ballroom.”

Vivian’s face turned pale beneath her makeup.

“And I intend,” Richard added, “to find out who.”
