CHAPTER 14: Clara’s Grave

Clara Hart was buried behind a small church outside Trenton, under a stone Elena had paid for in installments.

The graveyard was quiet the morning Richard came.

No cameras. No donors. No security line except one discreet car near the road. Elena had insisted. This moment did not belong to the Alden empire. It belonged to her mother.

Richard stood before the grave for a long time.

Clara Hart. Beloved Mother. Brave Heart.

He read it three times.

Elena watched him from a few feet away, uncertain whether to comfort him or blame him. Both feelings lived inside her, tangled and sharp.

Richard finally spoke.

“She hated carnations.”

Elena looked at him.

He held a bouquet of white lilies.

“She said carnations looked like flowers pretending to be lace.”

A surprised laugh broke through Elena’s grief before she could stop it.

“My mother said that all the time.”

Richard smiled through tears. “She also said expensive coffee tasted like burnt pride.”

Elena laughed again, then covered her face.

Richard did not move closer until she let him.

“I missed everything,” he said. “Her pregnancy. Your birth. Your first steps. Your school plays. Every birthday. I missed the years she needed me most.”

Elena wiped her eyes. “You didn’t know.”

“I should have known.”

She wanted to argue, but the truth was complicated. Vivian had lied. Charles had hidden. The board had benefited. But Richard had lived inside power so vast that people around him could erase a woman and child without him seeing.

Maybe that was also a kind of guilt.

Elena placed the old photograph against the grave.

“She kept this in her Bible,” she said. “She never stopped loving you. She just stopped expecting you.”

Richard closed his eyes.

The DNA results arrived that afternoon.

Grace called Elena first.

She did not use dramatic words.

“Elena,” she said gently, “Richard Alden is your biological grandfather.”

Elena sat beside Clara’s grave, phone trembling in her hand.

Richard did not ask what Grace said.

He already knew from Elena’s face.
