Detective Paul Mercer had written the Blackwater Bridge report.
His timeline placed Grant at the hospital, not the crash site. It described Claire as dead on impact and blamed Samuel Miller for improper brake maintenance.
Maya found discrepancies in the dispatch records.
An emergency call was received at 9:18 p.m. Mercer’s report changed it to 9:05. The earlier time supported the claim that Grant arrived after responders.
Cell-tower data showed Grant’s phone near the bridge at 8:57.
Mercer later received a consulting contract from Halcyon worth three hundred thousand dollars.
During questioning, he denied altering evidence for payment. He said Grant’s exact arrival time seemed irrelevant and Samuel’s maintenance invoice appeared clear.
Then investigators played Samuel’s recording and showed the unlisted diagnostic module.
Mercer requested counsel.
A search of his home produced Claire’s original phone inside a locked evidence box never entered into the official inventory. Deleted data showed her calls to Daniel and Grant. A partial audio file had survived.
Rain filled the recording.
Claire’s voice said, “Grant, I know what you moved from Noah’s trust.”
Grant answered, “You should have signed while this was still business.”
The call ended with metal impact.
Mercer accepted a cooperation agreement.
He admitted Grant pressured him to revise the timeline and blame Samuel. Grant said the company’s survival depended on avoiding a public scandal and promised the crash was an accident caused by a device intended only to frighten Claire.
Mercer chose the explanation that came with money and career security.
His confession reopened other cases he handled for corporate clients.
Grace listened from the back of the hearing room.
For years, her father’s name had carried the shame of killing Claire and injuring Noah. Samuel died believing the official record would never change.
The district attorney issued a public correction.
Samuel Miller did not cause the crash.
Grace felt relief followed by grief.
