The Board Meeting Before Sunrise

Chapter 07 - The Board Meeting Before Sunrise

Grant told the board Daniel had suffered a breakdown.

He described the reopened crash investigation as a grief-driven attack based on a child’s unreliable memory and a disgruntled employee’s daughter. He requested temporary authority to complete the Halcyon sale before rumors damaged the company.

Several directors supported him.

Whitmore Adaptive Systems had missed earnings targets. Its accessible-device programs were expensive, and Halcyon offered a premium price.

Daniel entered the meeting with Claire’s letter and the trust attorney.

Noah joined by secure video.

Grant objected immediately.

“My nephew’s medical condition makes this inappropriate.”

Noah used a speech-generating device prepared by an independent therapist.

“I am a shareholder.”

The artificial voice filled the boardroom.

Every director became still.

Noah stated that he opposed the sale and revoked any consent supposedly given in his name. He requested an audit of the trust and company payments to Meridian Vehicle Research.

Grant called the statement coached.

The therapist appeared on screen and explained that Noah selected every word independently. Neurological testing found no cognitive impairment. His difficulty involved speech, trauma and medication effects—not judgment.

Daniel presented the morning’s court order suspending Grant’s control of Noah’s shares.

Grant’s attorney argued the order was temporary.

Daniel answered, “So is your seat.”

The board voted to place Grant on administrative leave pending investigation. Two directors refused. Three abstained. The motion passed by one vote.

Grant did not shout.

He closed his folder and warned that without him, lenders would withdraw and Halcyon would sue.

Then Maya entered with federal investigators.

Trust funds had crossed state lines through shell companies. The case now included possible wire fraud and obstruction.

Grant’s devices were seized.

Before leaving, he looked at Daniel.

“You think Claire trusted you more than me? She hid the evidence because she knew you would freeze.”

The words struck their target.

Daniel had frozen.

But Claire also created a path that waited until Noah could speak.

Trust had not been placed in one adult.

It had been distributed across a mechanic, a bank box, a caregiver and a child everyone underestimated.

Grant had mistaken delay for victory.
