Grant Entered Smiling

Chapter 04 - Grant Entered Smiling

Grant Whitmore entered the kitchen carrying a bottle of champagne and a leather document case.

He was younger than Daniel by four years, with the same dark hair and the easier smile. In public photographs, the brothers looked like two versions of the same inheritance.

Grant stopped when he saw the cake.

For a fraction of a second, panic crossed his face.

Then he smiled.

“I thought we agreed birthdays were difficult for Noah.”

Daniel stood between him and the wheelchair.

“No. You agreed.”

Grant glanced at the note.

“What is that?”

“Claire’s handwriting.”

The champagne bottle remained in Grant’s hand.

He looked toward Grace.

“You were hired to care for Noah, not search private cabinets.”

Grace said nothing.

Noah’s fingers tightened on the paper.

Grant approached slowly, speaking in the gentle voice he used with doctors and trustees.

“Buddy, you seem overwhelmed. Why don’t we put that away and take your medication?”

Noah looked at Daniel.

“Don’t.”

Grant froze.

It was the first time he had heard his nephew speak since the rehabilitation center.

Daniel watched him closely.

“You told me the damage made speech nearly impossible.”

“Trauma symptoms change.”

“You also told me Claire died on impact.”

Grant placed the champagne on the island.

“The emergency report said—”

“Noah says she was alive.”

Grant’s concern became sorrow.

He explained that traumatic memories could feel real without being accurate. Noah might have combined dreams, overheard conversations and guilt.

Then he opened the leather case.

Inside were documents extending Grant’s emergency control over Noah’s trust for another five years. Dr. Martin Vale had signed a new incapacity evaluation that morning.

Noah had not been examined.

Daniel lifted the report.

“This says he cannot communicate a consistent preference.”

Grant glanced at the boy who had just contradicted him aloud.

“The report was prepared from his history.”

Grace slid Noah’s tablet onto the counter.

“He has been communicating consistently for months.”

Grant looked at her as if seeing the real threat for the first time.

Daniel asked for the key mentioned in Claire’s note.

Grace placed it beside the letter.

Grant reached for it.

Daniel caught his wrist.

The brothers stood inches apart.

“Whatever it opens,” Daniel said, “you will see it when the police do.”

Grant laughed once.

“You are going to call police because a traumatized child repeated a fantasy encouraged by an employee?”

Noah spoke again.

“You were wearing Mom’s red raincoat.”

Grant’s face emptied.

Claire kept a red emergency coat in the SUV. Police records said it was missing from the wreck.

Noah had never been told.

Daniel released his brother’s wrist and called Detective Maya Cole, the officer who originally investigated the crash.

Grant left before she answered.

He forgot the champagne.

He took the document case.
