Chapter 06 - The Fire at the Storage Facility
The fire began in the rear bay where Claire’s SUV had been stored.
Sprinklers failed because the water valve was closed manually. Security cameras stopped recording eleven minutes before the alarm.
Firefighters saved part of the vehicle.
The engine compartment and front brakes suffered severe heat damage, but the diagnostic system remained inside a protected housing beneath the dashboard.
Investigators recovered a black electronic module not listed in the manufacturer’s design.
Its serial number traced to a company called Meridian Vehicle Research. Whitmore Adaptive Systems had paid Meridian for “executive transportation security.”
Grant approved every invoice.
He claimed the module was an anti-theft device installed without his technical knowledge. The fire, he said, proved someone was trying to frame him.
Maya reviewed access logs.
Grant’s security director entered the facility forty minutes before ignition. His badge recorded no exit because he left through an emergency door.
Police found him at home with burns on one hand.
The director requested an attorney.
Daniel returned to Whitmore House after midnight. The untouched birthday cake remained in the refrigerator. The candle lay beside Claire’s note.
Noah was awake.
Daniel sat beside him without asking questions.
After several minutes, he apologized.
Not for missing the birthday alone.
For allowing every difficult conversation to pass through Grant. For accepting medical reports without bringing Noah to an independent doctor. For spending years beside his son while remaining emotionally absent.
Noah listened.
Then he typed on the tablet:
You were sad. He used it.
Daniel began to cry.
The message offered understanding, not absolution.
He recognized the difference.
Grace entered with tea and the evening medication tray. Daniel examined every bottle. Dr. Vale had prescribed a sedative before the trust hearing.
Noah pointed to it and shook his head.
Grace said the drug made speaking harder.
Daniel placed the bottle in an evidence bag.
The crash, medical control and trust extension were no longer separate events. Each reduced Noah’s ability to contradict Grant before the company sale.

He intended to remove Daniel before the investigation reached the financial records.
