Grant’s criminal trial began eighteen months after the birthday.
Prosecutors charged him with murder, attempted murder, trust fraud, obstruction and conspiracy. Mercer and the security director testified under cooperation agreements. Dr. Vale faced a separate trial.
The diagnostic module became central evidence.
Engineers demonstrated that it suppressed brake warnings and reduced hydraulic assistance after a remote command. The device did not cut the brakes completely. It made failure appear intermittent until the driver reached higher speed.
Grant’s defense argued he intended to frighten Claire into postponing the trust amendment, not kill her.
The command was activated as she approached a rain-covered bridge.
The jury heard Claire’s surviving call.
They saw Grant’s location records and the red coat.
Noah testified through his communication device from a private room connected by video. Cameras could not broadcast his face.
Grant’s attorney asked whether Grace had practiced answers with him.
Noah replied:
She practiced helping me breathe. The answers are mine.
The attorney suggested trauma altered his memory.
Noah agreed that some details were uncertain. He did not remember which window broke first. He did not know whether Grant touched Claire after taking the phone.
Then he listed what remained consistent: the red coat, the trust argument, the delayed emergency call and the threat in the hospital.
His willingness to admit uncertainty strengthened the facts he maintained.
Daniel testified about the missed voicemail, medical authorizations and Grant’s role after the crash. The defense used his failures aggressively.
Daniel did not deny them.
“I gave my brother access because I was broken,” he said. “He used that access to keep my son broken too.”
The jury convicted Grant on every major count, including murder under reckless and intentional-conspiracy theories.
He received a life sentence.
The verdict did not restore Claire or Samuel.
