Story Summary:
Dante Moretti returns to his Long Island mansion and finds his six-year-old daughter Lily crying beside a bruised maid who has just been fired. His fiancée, Vanessa Cole, claims Elena frightened the child, but Elena says Vanessa destroyed Lily’s last gift from her late mother and planned to send the girl away after the wedding. A hidden recording inside Lily’s teddy bear exposes Vanessa’s scheme to gain control of the family trust. Dante must confront the danger he brought into his home and become the father Lily needs.
## chapter 01 - He Came Home Running
Dante Moretti entered the mansion at a run.
Then he saw his daughter crying.
Lily stood near the first stair in a pale cream dress, clutching a gray teddy bear against her chest. Her small shoulders shook. One side of her hair had fallen loose from its ribbon. Beside her stood Elena Ruiz, the housemaid who had cared for Lily since infancy.
Elena’s cheek was bruised.
Her black uniform was torn at the sleeve.
One hand rested protectively in front of Lily.
At the bottom of the staircase, Vanessa Cole waited in a fitted white lace gown, diamond earrings and necklace glittering under the chandelier. She looked less like a bride and more like a queen interrupted before a coronation.
Dante stopped in the center of the foyer.
Come home now.
Please.
It is Lily.
Vanessa lifted her chin.
“Dante, thank God. Fire her before she tells you another lie.”
Elena looked at him with wet, frightened eyes.
“I already was fired,” she said.
Lily buried her face in the teddy bear.
Dante’s hands curled into fists.
