Now, in the foyer, Dante looked at Elena’s torn sleeve and bruised face.
“You are not fired.”
Elena shook her head quickly.
“Mr. Moretti, I did not call to keep my job.”
“I know.”
“I called because Miss Lily needed you.”
Dante looked at his daughter.
He turned back to Elena.
“You protected her when I was not here.”
Elena’s eyes filled.
“I promised her mother.”
Dante’s composure broke for one brief second.
Vanessa sneered.
“How touching. The maid becomes family.”
Dante faced her.
“She behaved like family.”
Elena covered her mouth.
Lily reached for her hand.
Dante looked toward the security officers who had appeared near the main entrance after his silent signal.
“No one escorts Elena anywhere,” he said. “Except to a doctor if she agrees.”
