Dante had almost ignored Elena’s call.
His phone vibrated once.
Elena’s name appeared.
He silenced it.
It vibrated again.
Then a message arrived with no explanation, only urgency.
Come home now. It is Lily.
Dante stood before the meeting ended.
Dante listened.
Then he heard something behind her.
A child crying.
Not loudly.
The small, broken crying Lily used when she was trying not to be heard.
Dante hung up and drove faster.
Now, standing in the foyer, he remembered that sound. He looked at Lily’s white knuckles around the teddy bear. He looked at Elena’s bruised cheek. Then he looked at Vanessa, untouched in white lace.
Vanessa spread her hands.
“She manipulated Lily because she knew I was replacing her after the wedding.”
Elena whispered, “I called because Miss Lily was afraid.”
Dante’s eyes hardened.
“Afraid of whom?”
