Vanessa’s Final Lie

Chapter 13 - Vanessa’s Final Lie

Vanessa asked for one final chance to explain.

Dante allowed it because Lily and Elena were safely in the kitchen and Samuel had arrived to witness the conversation. Vanessa stood beneath the chandelier in her wedding gown, mascara untouched, posture still carefully controlled.

“I never intended to hurt her.”

Samuel opened a folder.

“The recording says otherwise.”

“I intended to create discipline.”

Dante’s jaw tightened.

Vanessa looked at him directly.

“You know what your daughter will become if everyone treats grief like permission. Elena encourages weakness. You disappear for days, then return with gifts. Someone had to make Lily adaptable.”

“You wanted her out of the way,” he said.

Vanessa’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

Samuel noticed too.

Dante stepped closer.

“Say it.”

Vanessa’s voice lowered.

“I wanted a life with you that was not built around a dead woman.”

Dante looked toward the staircase where Sofia’s portrait hung in the upper hall.

“My daughter is not my past.”

Vanessa said nothing.

“She is my responsibility.”

Vanessa looked at the ring on the table.

“And me?”

Dante’s answer was quiet.

“You were a choice.”

He glanced at Samuel.

“Now you are a legal problem.”

Security opened the main doors.

Vanessa walked out wearing the dress intended for her wedding.
