Chapter 08 - The Woman in White
Vanessa reached for dignity because control was gone.
She had planned to become Mrs. Moretti before anyone questioned why Lily wanted to hide from her.
“Dante,” she said, softening her voice, “I made mistakes. But I was trying to prepare this house for a new life.”
Elena flinched at the word prepare.
Lily pressed closer to her.
Vanessa noticed and turned on the maid.
“You poisoned her against me.”
Elena’s fear finally gave way to anger.
“She was scared before I entered the room.”
“You are staff.”
“I am the person who stayed when you told a child her mother no longer mattered.”
Vanessa’s face twisted.
Dante stepped between them.
“You fired Elena?” he asked.
“Yes.”
“You do not have that authority.”
“I am your fiancée.”
“Not anymore.”
Vanessa stopped breathing.
Dante removed the engagement ring from the chain he wore beneath his shirt. Then he placed the ring on the entry table.
