Amelia’s Decision

Chapter 12 - Amelia’s Decision
Amelia resigned from the family foundation bearing her name.
The Amelia Vance Scholarship had been funded partly through profits from the detention company. She could not continue accepting praise for money created by fear.
She transferred its legitimate assets into an independent legal-aid organization.
Richard called her from a number not yet blocked.
“You are erasing your mother’s work.”
“My mother wanted the scholarship to help immigrant students.”
“She wanted the family name protected.”
“You always speak for dead people when their wishes are useful.”
Richard hung up.
Amelia’s relationship with Gabriel remained uncertain.
They loved each other.
Love did not answer whether their lives had become entangled through secrets too large to survive.
She asked for space.
Gabriel gave it.
For three months, they met only in boardrooms and hearings.
He never used ownership, media attention, or mutual friends to reach her.
Amelia moved from her father’s apartment into a small rental near the airport legal clinic. She began representing workers in compensation claims, including several against companies owned by Gabriel.
He did not interfere.
One evening, they met across a mediation table.
Amelia argued that Navarro Global owed additional damages to a group of mechanics.
Gabriel’s lawyers objected.
Gabriel instructed them to answer the evidence.
Afterward, he waited in the empty room.
“You were difficult today,” he said.
“You lost.”
“I did.”
She almost smiled.
Then her expression became serious.
“I need to know you will not confuse loving me with expecting loyalty to your decisions.”
“I learned what that looks like from your father.”
“That is not an answer.”
“No. I will disagree with you. I may become defensive. But I will not treat your disagreement as betrayal.”
Amelia studied him.

Trust did not return in the dramatic moment when the airport bowed.
It began returning across ordinary tables where neither person controlled the other’s voice.
