Sterling International’s name had belonged to the investment family that founded the original airfield.
Richard used it as evidence that institutions existed through powerful men.
Employees proposed renaming the airport after Miguel Navarro.
Gabriel declined.
“My father would hate an entire airport named after him.”
Elena agreed.
“He disliked attention and airports.”
The board held public meetings.
Residents suggested names honoring pilots, local geography, civil-rights leaders, and workers.
The final choice was Gateway International Airport.
No family name.
No billionaire.
No chairman.
Gateway represented movement without implying ownership.
Gate Twelve became the Miguel Navarro Worker Safety Center. It provided equipment training, multilingual reporting systems, and legal protection for employees refusing unsafe work.
The airport’s luxury executive lounge was reduced in size. The remaining space became a rest and childcare center for night-shift employees.
Retail leases were reopened through transparent bidding.
Detention rooms received independent oversight and legal access.
The first annual report showed lower profit during the transition.
It also showed fewer injuries, shorter employee turnover, and increasing passenger trust.
Investors approved the model.
At the renaming ceremony, pilots and flight attendants formed the same two lines seen during Gabriel’s arrival.
This time, they did not bow.
Gabriel had requested that no employee bow to any executive again.
Instead, they applauded workers whose complaints led to reform.
Helen Brooks cut the ribbon with Elena and Beatrice Hall.
Gabriel stood behind them.
A reporter asked why the owner was not at the center.
He answered, “Because ownership is not the work being honored.”
Richard watched the ceremony from prison television.
