Amelia grew up above the airport.
Richard’s office contained a private dining room where she completed homework while jets lifted beyond the windows. He taught her to identify aircraft before she could drive and told her every runway light existed because he made decisions others were too weak to make.
After her mother died, the airport became their shared language.
Richard missed school performances but brought Amelia onto inaugural flights. He forgot birthdays but named a foundation scholarship after her.
She mistook public gestures for intimacy.
Now, in the suspended CEO’s house, she searched her father’s study.
Richard had changed the locks.
Amelia used the emergency key her mother once gave her.
Inside, she found boxes of newspaper clippings about Gabriel’s companies, photographs from his meetings, and reports tracking his relationship with her.
Richard knew Gabriel’s identity four months before the airport sale.
He had not discovered the romance recently.
He had allowed it to continue while searching for a way to discredit him.
One report described Amelia as “an access vulnerability.”
Her father saw her not as a daughter to protect, but as a route another man might use.
In a locked drawer she found Marissa Cole’s passport and a one-way ticket to Argentina.
Richard had planned her escape.
Amelia called investigators.
As she waited, Richard entered the study.
He looked at the open drawer.
“You broke into my home.”
“You tracked me.”
“I protected you.”
“You wrote that I was a vulnerability.”
He removed his coat slowly.
“Gabriel approached you because of me.”
“The reports show you knew he did not.”
Richard’s face hardened.
“Do you understand what his purchase does? Our name built Sterling International. He will turn it into a political symbol.”
“He is auditing stolen wages and dead workers.”
“Every institution has casualties.”
Amelia stared at him.
“You really believe that.”
“I believe leadership requires deciding which losses the system can survive.”
“My mother was a loss you survived too.”
Richard flinched.
Amelia’s mother died after a long illness while Richard attended an investor summit. He arrived after she lost consciousness.
For years, Amelia defended him.
Now she saw the same pattern.
A person mattered until their pain interfered with his schedule.
Investigators arrived and collected Marissa’s passport.
Richard watched his daughter give them permission to search.
