Elena had been a United States citizen for years through naturalization completed after her return.
She never held a ceremony because the process felt connected to the fear following Miguel’s death.
Gateway International offered to host a group citizenship ceremony in the central terminal.
Elena hesitated.
Then she agreed on the condition that she would participate as one person among hundreds, not as the chairman’s mother.
Families filled the terminal beneath flags from dozens of countries.
A federal judge administered the oath.
Elena stood beside nurses, mechanics, teachers, restaurant workers, and grandparents.
Gabriel watched from the public seating area.
Amelia held his hand.
After the oath, the terminal screens displayed no corporate message.
They showed first names submitted voluntarily by the new citizens.
Elena’s appeared among hundreds.
She touched Miguel’s badge inside her handbag.
“He should be here,” Gabriel said.
“He is in every part of you that refuses to look away.”
They walked toward the arrivals doors.
Years earlier, Elena left through a side corridor while officials questioned her status and Gabriel cried.
This time, she exited through the center while strangers applauded one another.
She stopped beneath the place where Richard once threatened her son.
“Do you remember being six?” she asked.
“Pieces.”
“I told you airports were doors. I did not tell you doors can be guarded by people who think they own the world.”
Gabriel looked around the terminal.
