The First Night Under the Same Roof

Chapter 12 - The First Night Under the Same Roof
Victor’s arrest did not make the townhouse feel like a family.
Eli still hid food beneath his mattress.
Noah still became angry when Eli wore his clothes without asking, even though he had offered them.
Caroline overcorrected every difference.
If Noah received a gift, she bought Eli the same one. If Eli had therapy, she asked whether Noah needed it too.
The boys began to resent being treated like mirrored objects.
Dana explained what Caroline could not see.
“Equality is not duplication. They did not have the same childhood.”
Noah had memories of birthday cakes, private schools, and a mother who kissed him goodnight.
Eli had shelter numbers, locked rooms, and Miriam teaching him how to change trains when followed.
Caroline took Eli shopping and allowed him to choose anything.
He selected one dark hoodie almost identical to the old one.
“Why that?” she asked.
“The pockets close.”
She understood the answer was not about style.
At dinner, Noah asked whether Eli remembered being a baby.
“No.”
“I don’t either.”
“Then why do you keep asking?”
“Because everyone says we were together.”
Eli pushed away his plate.
“We weren’t together. We were in the same picture.”
He left the table.
Noah looked wounded.
Caroline followed Eli but stopped outside his room.
She had learned that entering without permission could feel like capture.
“May I come in?”
After a long silence, he said yes.
Eli sat on the floor holding Miriam’s notebook.
“If I like it here, does that mean I forgot her?”
“No.”
“You didn’t know her.”
“No.”
“She lied sometimes.”
“To keep you safe?”
“Maybe. Sometimes because she was scared.”
Caroline sat nearby.
“I was angry that she did not bring you to me sooner.”
Eli looked up.
“She said you were watched.”
“She was right.”
“She said rich people think finding out late means they cared the whole time.”
Caroline accepted the blow.
“I loved the child I thought died. I am still learning you.”
That answer seemed to matter.
Eli gave her one page from Miriam’s notebook.
It described Caroline asleep after surgery, whispering both chosen names.
Noah.
Caleb.
Eli traced the second name.
“Do I have to use it?”
“No.”
“Can it be mine without replacing Eli?”
“Yes.”
He nodded.
“Then maybe Eli Caleb.”
May you like
Caroline did not hug him.
He leaned against her shoulder first.
