Noah gave Eli one of his coats.
Eli refused to wear it.
“It makes people look at me.”
“They already look at you,” Noah said.
“That’s different.”
The argument became their first real fight.
Noah accused Eli of treating every kindness like a trap.
Eli accused Noah of treating every problem like a game adults would solve.
Caroline did not force them to reconcile.
Twins were not a magical correction to years lived apart.
At the custody hearing, Victor’s lawyers presented photographs of Eli sleeping in the closet and Noah’s school fight.
They argued Caroline’s home had become unstable.
Dana Ruiz testified that closet sleeping was a trauma response, not evidence of mistreatment. She also described Victor’s efforts to control the first DNA test.
Then Graham Pike appeared voluntarily.
He denied kidnapping, surveillance, or evidence tampering.
He claimed Miriam Shaw was mentally unstable and had abducted Eli for money.
Maya asked why Whitmore Security paid foster agencies under GREEN THREAD.
Graham said the payments funded confidential child protection requested by David before his death.
The lie was clever because David could not deny it.
Lena Ortiz found the weakness.
The first payment was authorized three days after David died.
The signature used his digital credentials.
A forensic review showed the authorization originated from Victor’s office.
Federal agents seized Whitmore Security servers.
Graham fled the courthouse during lunch.
His abandoned car was found near the river with blood on the steering wheel.
Victor announced that Graham had likely taken his own life under pressure.
Eli watched the report.
“Miriam said powerful people make fake deaths when they need time.”
The next morning, a prepaid phone arrived at Caroline’s townhouse.
It contained a single video.
Graham Pike sat inside an unknown warehouse, alive and terrified.
“Victor ordered the hospital switch,” he said. “Keller has the original delivery recording. I can take you to him.”
The message ended with a demand.
Caroline must transfer ten million dollars and come alone.
Maya called it a trap.
Eli noticed a sound in the background—three long metallic groans, followed by a train horn.
He had slept near enough stations to identify the rhythm.
“That’s the freight yard in Red Hook.”
