Victor agreed to meet Caroline in their father’s old office.
He stood beneath Augustus Whitmore’s portrait, hands folded behind his back.
“You stole my son.”
“I prevented a governance crisis.”
Caroline stared at him.
“He was a newborn.”
“He was also the mechanism Father designed to remove me.”
“Then fight the trust. You do not erase a child.”
Victor’s expression sharpened.
“You remember Father as principled because he died before you saw what principle costs. He built an empire, then handed control to a daughter who wanted to redesign cities with playgrounds and rent protections.”
“You mean people.”
“I mean margins.”
Victor admitted learning about the twins but denied ordering Eli’s death. He claimed Keller proposed recording one infant as nonviable and placing him through a private adoption.
“Miriam kidnapped him before arrangements were complete.”
“He was mine.”
“You had one son. You had the life you could manage.”
Caroline crossed the room and struck him.
The blow surprised them both.
Victor touched his cheek.
“There. That is what the board needs to see.”
A hidden camera blinked near the bookshelf.
He had staged the meeting.
Within an hour, edited footage showed Caroline attacking Victor without context. His lawyers filed for emergency guardianship over the boys, citing her emotional instability.
The petition included old medical records from Caroline’s postpartum depression.
Private notes from her therapist had been obtained illegally.
The court scheduled a hearing.
Caroline wanted to destroy Victor publicly.
Maya Sloan, the family attorney David once trusted, gave different advice.
“Do not prove you are calmer than him. Prove the system measuring you belongs to him.”
They traced the petition’s psychiatrist to a clinic financed by Whitmore Holdings. The judge’s election committee had received Victor’s donations.
Maya requested federal jurisdiction.
Meanwhile, Noah heard children at school call Eli “the gutter twin.”
He punched one of them.
Caroline suspended his tablet and made him apologize.
Noah protested.
“They said he is only here for money.”
“And hitting them teaches what?”
“That they should stop.”
Eli spoke from the doorway.
“They don’t stop. They just wait until you’re not there.”
Noah looked ashamed.
The brothers had identical faces but different survival lessons.
One believed adults eventually enforced fairness.
The other believed safety lasted only as long as someone stronger remained nearby.
Caroline sat between them.
“We are not going to become Victor to defeat Victor.”
Eli asked, “What if Victor wins?”
