The DNA result arrived thirty-six hours later.
No biological relationship.
Victor read the report in Caroline’s hospital suite and placed it gently on the table.
“I am sorry.”
Caroline did not touch it.
Noah began to cry.
Eli did not.
He pulled on his old hoodie and started packing the few things Dana had bought for him.
“Where are you going?” Caroline asked.
“Back.”
“Back where?”
“Anywhere people already know I’m nobody.”
Dana blocked the door.
“You are not leaving alone.”
Eli’s face remained flat, but his hands shook.
Caroline picked up the report.
The laboratory listed Eli’s eye color as brown.
His eyes were gray-blue.
The collection time was 9:14 a.m.
Caroline had watched the swab taken at 10:02.
She called the federal laboratory directly.
The technician confirmed the sealed sample arrived with proper identification—but the custody form was uploaded through Whitmore Legal Services.
Victor had inserted himself after promising not to.
He appeared offended.
“Our counsel verified procedure. That is standard.”
“Not when I ordered independent handling.”
“You are accusing me because the result hurts.”
Caroline looked at the hospital security feed.
The sample courier entered the parking garage carrying a silver case. Seven minutes later, he emerged without it. A black Whitmore company vehicle left through a private exit.
Victor stood.
“I will not remain while you turn grief into paranoia.”
Eli watched him closely.
“Miriam said the other Whitmore would use a paper to make me disappear.”
Victor’s face tightened.
“Your guardian trained you well.”
“She was a nurse.”
The room fell silent.
Caroline searched Miriam Shaw’s records.
Eight years earlier, a nurse named Miriam Shaw worked in the maternity wing where the twins were born. She resigned the morning after the reported death.
Her employee file had been sealed by a settlement approved by Victor.
Caroline ordered a second DNA collection through three laboratories, with samples taken in open court.
Victor’s lawyers filed an emergency motion to stop it, claiming repeated testing exploited Eli.
The judge denied the motion.
Before the new test, child services received an anonymous report accusing Caroline of coaching Eli for inheritance fraud. A petition requested his removal from her contact.
Dana traced the call to a payphone inside Whitmore Center.
Victor denied involvement.
That evening, someone broke into the hospital records room.
Miriam’s original employment file disappeared.
But the intruder missed one item.
A retired clerk had scanned Miriam’s resignation letter years earlier.
