Chapter 15 - The Mother Who Needed Forgiveness
After the trial, Caroline expected relief.
Instead, she became angry at impossible moments.
A hospital commercial made her leave the room.
Seeing green thread in a sewing kit caused her hands to shake.
She resented Miriam for taking Eli, then hated herself because Miriam had saved him.
She resented David for confronting Victor alone, then remembered he had tried to protect everyone.
She apologized to Eli too often.
Finally, he said, “You keep saying sorry like I have to tell you it’s okay.”
Caroline stopped.
Her therapist explained that guilt could become another demand placed on the harmed person. If Caroline needed Eli to forgive her, he would have to care for her pain before understanding his own.
She changed the language.
Instead of “I’m sorry I lost you,” she said, “I am responsible for learning how to be your mother now.”
Instead of asking whether he loved her, she asked what made mornings easier.
Eli wanted cereal in clear containers so he could see there was enough.
Noah wanted one evening a week without anyone discussing the case.
Both wanted Caroline to knock before entering.
The rules went onto the refrigerator.
One afternoon, the boys argued over the locket.
Noah believed it belonged to both of them.
Eli believed Miriam gave it to him.
Caroline refused to decide.
They finally agreed that Eli would keep the original while Noah received a copy of the photograph.
Noah remained unhappy.
Fairness did not require no one to feel disappointed.
That lesson mattered.
Caroline visited Miriam’s grave alone.
The marker was small, paid for by a nurses’ charity.
“She saved him,” Caroline said aloud. “And she kept him from me.”
Both statements survived the same sentence.
Later, Eli joined her carrying flowers from a sidewalk stand.
He placed the locket against the stone.
“She said mothers are people who stay scared and do the next thing anyway.”
Caroline looked at him.
“Was she your mother?”
“Yes.”
The answer hurt.
It also freed him from having to choose.
Caroline placed her flowers beside his.
“Then she and I have something important in common.”
Eli took her hand.
