The Woman in the West Wing

Chapter 11 - The Woman in the West Wing
Vale House had a sealed west wing closed after Malcolm’s stroke.
Victor said the rooms contained mold and unstable wiring. Contractors were never allowed inside without his security team.
Police arrived with a warrant.
Behind a concealed service elevator, they found a medical suite built into the old nursery floor.
Evelyn lay unconscious in a room overlooking the garden.
Dean Morrow stood beside her bed with a packed medical case. He surrendered when officers entered, but he kept repeating that he had followed orders to protect the family.
Gabriel stopped at the doorway.
The woman on the bed was older, thinner, and marked by years he had not witnessed. Yet her left hand still curved inward the way it did when she slept.
He did not touch her until a doctor said it was safe.
“Owen is here,” he whispered. “Anna too.”
Evelyn’s eyelids moved.
Victor was not in the west wing.
A hidden tunnel led from the medical suite to the garage. His car had left before police arrived.
Inside the suite, investigators recovered medication logs, transfer orders, and video recordings dating back nineteen years.
Malcolm appeared on the earliest tapes.
He knew Evelyn survived.
He ordered doctors to keep her under another name until “the emotional crisis passed.” When she continued accusing Victor, Malcolm authorized stronger treatment. After his stroke, Victor took control and moved her repeatedly.
The family patriarch had not misunderstood the truth.
He buried it.
Evelyn regained consciousness two days later in a public hospital.
Gabriel waited beside the bed.
When she saw him, panic crossed her face.
“Dean said you died.”
“He lied.”
“Victor said Owen hated me.”
“He lied.”
She looked toward the window.
“Malcolm said the company needed peace.”
Gabriel’s voice broke.
“They all lied.”
Owen entered slowly.
Evelyn stared at the adult face of the child she had last seen at seven.
She lifted one trembling hand.
“Little North?”
Owen knelt beside the bed.
For years, he imagined asking why she left.
Now he understood that leaving had never been her choice.
Anna remained in the doorway.
Evelyn saw her and began to cry.
“My baby.”
Anna did not move closer.
“Which name did you give me?”
Evelyn answered, “Clara.”
Anna closed her eyes.

The family had found her.
Her identity would take longer.
