Chapter 05 - The Voice Before the Crash
The tape captured an argument inside Malcolm Vale’s study.
Evelyn accused Victor of creating shell companies called Horizon North, Horizon East, and Horizon Relief. Money moved from employee pensions into the accounts, then into real estate and political donations.
Victor denied theft.
He called it temporary liquidity.
Evelyn said she had copied the ledgers and contacted federal investigators.
Then Malcolm’s voice appeared.
The founder of Vale International sounded tired, not surprised.
“You will not destroy this family over accounting.”
“People lost retirement money,” Evelyn replied.
“They will be made whole.”
“When?”
“When the company is stronger.”
“And if it never is?”
A chair scraped.
Malcolm said, “Gabriel has always encouraged your worst instincts.”
Victor added, “Leave Owen here and go with him if you want. But the boy stays a Vale.”
The recording ended with Evelyn saying, “He is my son before he is your heir.”
Owen removed the headphones.
For years, Malcolm’s portrait had hung above the company’s headquarters with the inscription: Duty Before Self.
Nora copied the tape and placed the original in a secure evidence bag.
“This proves motive and financial misconduct,” she said. “It does not prove the crash.”
Another cassette was labeled BRIDGE.
The audio began with wind and a car engine. Evelyn sounded breathless.
“They changed the route barriers. A black security car is behind me.”
She spoke Owen’s name.
Then came the sound of metal, a horn, and water.
Owen shut off the recorder.
He walked to the kitchen and vomited.
Nora followed but did not touch him.
When he returned, he found a final sound hidden after thirty seconds of silence.
A man’s voice near the recorder said, “She is alive.”
Another answered, “Then move her before Gabriel arrives.”
The second voice belonged to Dean Morrow.
Owen replayed the words.
His mother’s body had supposedly been recovered from the river the next morning. The coffin remained closed because of “severe water damage.”
If she survived the crash, whose body had they buried?
Nora searched the inventory inside the suitcase.
One notebook contained a hospital invoice folded between pages. The patient name was Elaine Ward. The admission date was the day after the crash.
The facility no longer existed.
